Los premios otorgados por la Academia de Cine y Artes de Estados Unidos se llevaron a cabo el domingo 9 de febrero de 2020 en el Dolby Theatre de Los Angeles, California
Hubo algunas tendencias claras que se marcaron según las previas entregas en los Golden Globe, los Critic’s Choice y hasta en los BAFTA, donde arrasó 1917, del cineasta inglés, Sam Mendes; sobre todo, en la cuestión histriónica.
Los premios para Mejor Actor, Actriz, Actor de Reparto y Actriz de Reparto fueron constantes en las cuatro entregas (Oscar, BAFTA, Critic’s Choice y Golden Globes) para los mismos actores: Joaquin Phoenix (Mejor Actor Protagónico por Joker), Renée Zellweger (Mejor Actriz Protagónico por Judy), Brad Pitt (Mejor Actor de Reparto por Érase una vez… en Hollywood) y Laura Dern (Mejor Actriz de Reparto por Historia de un matrimonio).
Por su parte, la revelación musical es la compositora de la cinta Joker, la islandesa Hildur Guðnadóttir, también con los cuatro premios para su Score Original.
Por su parte, el también compositor y leyenda viviente, John Williams, está nominado por su Score Original a Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker, rompiendo su propio récord, al obtener su nominación número 52 en los Oscars. Su primer llamado fue en 1968 con el filme Valley of Dolls. Se encuentra sólo detrás de Walt Disney quien tuvo 59. El legendario músico sucumbió ante la antes mencionada Hildur Guðnadóttir.
Joker fue la cinta con mayor número de menciones con un total de 11. Con 10: Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, The Irishman y 1917.
Joaquín Phoenix es el segundo actor en ganar un Oscar al interpretar a Joker. El primero fue para Heath Ledger con Batman: The Dark Knight (2008). El mismo caso se dio cuando Marlon Brando y Robert De Niro obtuvieron el premio por su interpretación de Vito Corleone en The Godfather (1972) y The Godfather II (1974), respectivamente
La sección In Memoriam fue especialmente emotiva por la inclusión del recién fallecido Kirk Douglas, el miércoles 5 de febrero a los 103 años de edad. La cantante Billie Eilish y su hermano, el productor y pianista Finneas O’Connell, interpretaron Yesterday a la par de las imágenes de gente que también falleció durante el último año como Peter Fonda, Doris Day, Rutger Hauer, Peter Mayhew y hasta el mexicano Fernado Luján.
La cinta ganadora de la noche fue Parasite, filme surcoreano del director y escritor Bong Joon-ho al llevarse 4 preseas a Mejor Película, Mejor Película Extranjera, Mejor Director y Mejor Guión Original. En total, tuvo 6 nominaciones.
